- Be sure to involve your child or teen in the process of creating/implementing the contract. He/she will be more invested if given a voice in the matter.
- Be sure that the child or teen is mentally, intellectually, and physically capable of meeting the expectations listed in the contract. It should be age-appropriate.
- Be sure to follow through with the rewards and consequences stated in the contract. Failure to do so will render the contract ineffective.
- Avoid being too rigid – look for (and recognize) even the small improvements in behavior. ANY improvement is still an improvement!
- Don’t get discouraged! Your child or teen might “rebel” at first – but keep at it and don’t let that prevent you from continuing with the behavior contract(s).
