I have a five year old son I love him to death he is a very smart little boy and is great at home but for some reason is having issues primarily at school and on occasion at daycare.  For some reason he responds well to firm kindness but the teachers who are more passive agressive he will walk all over them. The issues are primarily pertaining to he is fine and then when asked to do or told to do something he doesn't want to do out of the blue he becomes angry and has no issues even hitting an adult. He barely made the cut for kindergarten and is the youngest in his class I do not know how to address issues he does not display at home. Physical punishment has a negative response, I have tried sticker programs, acting out scenes, etc nothing is working I am taking him to a counselor soon but I am anti medicinal and do not want someone trying to diagnose my child with a disorder he may not have. Any advice would be great please help!!!!!

Hi Trish,

It sounds like you are doing the right thing by taking him to a counselor.  It may just be a case of him getting overwhelmed in the classroom, or it could be something more serious.  A counselor should be able to help you figure that out.  I agree with you on the subject of medicine too...be careful not to let them just offer you an "easy fix."  Medicine certainly has its place, but it is overprescribed and there are other ways of addressing most behavioral issues.  Good luck!

maybe he is not emotionally mature enough for school since he is so close to the cut which is what i am assuming by you saying he is the youngest in his class and he barely made the cut.  He also may be experiencing separation anxiety or possibly early signs of defiance disorders as they do begin at this age.  I agree about meds and usually counselors trying a behavioral approach before medication therapy.  Good luck and stick to it he is worth it even though at times he can work your last nerve!
